Thanks for the anecdote.  I too worked at the Ok Tedi Environment Department Hydrology Group, though somewhat later (between 2004 and 2006).  I am currently completing my Masters Degree in British Columbia, and in writing a Project Report for a course I am undertaking,  I found your insight into the early experiences fascinating and very informative!  Thanks again.
